Here's a little bit of the first song in the "hat" chapter in Welsh ...
'Gwn yn iawn eich bod yn meddwl
'Mod i'n hen beth hyll difrofol,
Ond na feirniadwch yn ôl fy ngolwg,
achos does 'run het mor nerthol;
It scans pretty well and has a neat ABAB rhyme scheme.... brilliant. Admittedly, the -wl and -wg ending are a bit dodgy, but it's the thought that counts...
Here's the Spanish version from in the "Hat" chapter ( El Sombrero seleccionador ) ...
Oh, podrás pensar que no soy bonito,
pero no juzgues por lo que ves.
Me comeré a mi mismo si puedes encontrar
un sombrero más inteligente que yo.
... it doesn't really scan very well, and the rhyme scheme is a feeble ABCA ... bonito/yo. Surely Spanish has the flexibility to make it better than that ?
Here's the last four lines of the Spanish version .... They are even worse ! The third line is awful, and the rhyme scheme has mysteriously shifted to ABBC . You just don't do that !
¡ Así que pruébame ! ¡ no tengas miedo !
¡ Y no recibirás una bofetada !
Estás en buenas manas ( aunque yo no las tenga).
Porque soy el Sombrero Pensante.
So ... Welsh 8 Spanish 2 ... a resounding victory there.
