Llawlyfr Adolygu ar gyfer Mathemateg TGAU ..... Haen Ganolradd.
That's "Intermediate Level" Maths Revision Handbook " that is.
As soon as you open the book you're besieged with Lluosrifau, Prawf Hollbwysig, cynigwch, rifau cysefin, amcangyfrif, echelin, rhyngdoriad, aildrefnwch, cymedr, amrediad, bolygonau amledd, cydberthyniad, tebygolrwydd cyfunol, isosgeles, ail isradd, polygonau afreolaidd, petrayal, arwynebedd, hafalochrog .... and that's only a small sample.
One obvious thing you can try is that old "pull-apart" trick ... you try splitting a compound word into separate bits and then you try to piece together what the whole word means.
aildrefnwch ... well, ail- tends to mean a second go, or "re-" .and trefnewch is telling you to arrange something or to "put it in order" and sure enough, there it is in the chapter on rearranging a formula !
hafalochrog ... hafal = equal, like and ochrog = sided, so it is about equal-sided shapes.
cydberthyniad ... perthynas = relative, relation, relationship and the prefix cyd- suggests co- , so this is a correlation !
This idea doesn't always work, and sometimes can give spectacularly baffling results, but just the doing of it can be highly educational and sometimes rather satisfying. ... mind you, isn't that what the bishop said to the actress ? Try some of the others in the comfort of your own home, or just wait till you turn that ominous page and are faced with a mass of horrible-looking words from a "special vocabulary" and try it then.
Try this as well .. a great song and video by Bando ... Shampw. I'd almost forgotten this, which went down the tubes along with all of my previous Welsh blog ( "The blog that disappeared") about a year ago. Enjoy !
