The big question was, do ALL the adjective after a feminine singular noun soft mutate, or just the first one? It's on the post before this if you fancy a cipolwg !
I did a bit of data collecting to find a few examples, but what with all the masculine nouns and plural nouns and those lazy authors who only put a pathetic ONE adjective after a noun, the collection was rather feeble.
In fact we only really got 2 clear examples, both involving a hat. What's more, they were the same hat. Just to remind you, here they are...
Het silc ddu ... feminine noun, silc un-SM-able, du SM'd to ddu !
Het silc ddu ryfeddol ... both du and rhyfeddol have been SM'd! Crikey.
The good thing was, in both cases the whole string of adjectives did indeed soft mutate. However, with only two examples involving the same identical bloody hat I felt this was not enough, so I devised a cunning plan.
I went to Google Translate and typed in some English sentences consisting of a noun that would be feminine in Welsh, followed by some adjective susceptible ( as they say in the books) to Soft Mutation .Aha! Then I looked to see what it would turn out to be in Welsh.
Crafty or what !
But, the problem was, Google Translate wasn't up to it .. it was very inconsistent, sometimes SM-ing them all, sometimes just the first one and sometimes none of them. This was no use at all for my purposes. I found a specialist Welsh-to-English translation site but that too was inconsistent.
So I had to go back to finding more examples ... in academic circles they call it assembling a corpus. So there. So, after a bit of reading various novels such as Mr Cadno Campus, Charlie a'r Ffatri Siocled, Sam Tân, Caffi Ffwlbart ac ati, I assembled this corpus .....
Ystafell fwyta fawr ... feminine noun followed by 2 soft mutations
Gwraig fach odidog ...... ditto !
Yr olygfa fwyta fawr .........ditto !!
Llygoden fawr gwrtais .......ditto !!!
Brechdan gaws flasus .........ditto !!!!
So ... at this point I feel pretty safe in saying that the whole string of adjectives soft-mutate, not just the first one. I haven't cherry-picked my results or weeded out any that didn't "work" either...
Plus ... no doubt I will find more while I'm reading the classics of Welsh literature ! And I will add them to that list up there ... up to a point.
There's only one thing missing .... I want to find strings of 4,5.... 117 adjectives !
