Amazingly, yesterday the papers featured another absolutely perfect ( English) one ... they dubbed Sutton United's reserve goalie, spotted eating a pasty during the match with Arsenal, the " roly-poly-goalie !"
That's a perfect language-specific joke ... you'd be very lucky to find an expression like that in another language that just happened to rhyme with their word for "goalie."
By the way, I thought up the headline "Gob-Stopper" ... because goalkeepers are often referred to as "stoppers". For obvious reasons.
So, like you do, I tried to do it in Welsh. I mean, somebody had to.
So I looked up the Welsh word for a goalkeeper ... golwr. How imaginative.
All I needed now was some Welsh word or expression that rhymed with "golwr" and meant that he was bit overweight, rotund, fat, lardy, huge, flabby, tubby ..... readers, I drew a blank.
But just a minute ... goalkeeper is also "gôl-geidwad" ... "ceidwad" is a "keeper" or "saviour" ... I like that. And "wad" does have a certain " fat" atmosphere about it ... a large sandwich is sometimes referred to as a "wad." Hmmmm.
fat = braster, bloneg ( nouns) and bras,tew,bloegog ( adjectives)
flabby = llipa, meddal, llac
tubby = twbog " ??
rotund = crwn, cyfrgrwn.
Hey .. on the same page as "rotund" in Y Geiriadur Mawr is " rholi-poli " !! Though, to be fair, it is referring to the cake of the same name. And it's a horrible bit of Wenglish too.
None of those rhymes neatly with golwr or gol-geidwad.
What about something to rhyme with the Welsh version of " stopper" then ?
Stopper = corcyn , topyn, but they are both "lids" ...that type of stopper. Nothing useful there
So, so far the nearest we've got is "rholi-poli golwr" which is rubbish on many fronts.
And if you want a tongue-twister, there's "gôl-geidwad cyfrgrwn. "
Hmmm... this needs further thought.
... y bore nesaf.....
...what about greedy [ barus, trachwantus] ..or even greedy-guts [ perfeddion barus] ... nope ...they don't work... none of them give me the right rhyme at the end.
Guzzler? Well, to guzzle = llawcio , traflyncu. Could "guzzler" be "traflyncwr"? It still isn't right though.
I've come ot the sad conclusion that it isn't going to happen in Welsh. Surely one of you out there is a Welsh speaker who can work something out?
Troednodiad ... this whole affair turned out badly, as I'm sure you've discovered. It seems there was some sort of betting arrangement which breached FA rules. It's good to know that the FA never overlooks stuff like that ! (??).
