Anyway, this is #83. I've got lots more planned ( I'm up to #443 in the draft stage).
Some of my more attentive and learned readers may already know about the rather odd features of the Welsh comparative ... it's a matter of great concern to many. The basics are simple enough ... "-er" needs "-ach" stuck on the endd, and "-est" needs "-a" stuck on the end.
So "cleverer " is "clyfarach"
And" cleverest" is "clyfara"
There's various special cases like da-gwell-gorau and uchel-uwch-ucha .
There's some that change the vowel a bit ... tlawd - tlotach - tlota and the like.
With longer adjectives you usually don't use an ending at all, you just stick "mwy" and "mwya" in front. You might ask a subsidiary "Pam83½" ... why don't "they" do that for all of them? But I won't... not today anyway..
But here's the more mysterious thing!!
With adjectives that end with -g or -b or -d , before you stick the -a or -ach on the end the consonant changes... like this ..
b ►p
g ►c
t ►d
The odd thing is, this is the reverse of the Soft Mutation for those letters.
The good thing ... it makes them easy to remember.
The bad thing ...... you can't help thinking they're having a laugh.
pam pam pam pam pam pampam ?
Well, it's music time now ...it's smashing, much-missed band Melys with Disco Pig..the song's not in Welsh , but there is Welsh to be seen and heard ... get out your notebooks and start Welsh-spotting right away !
