My rough translation of "Shorty Long" therefore goes like this ..
'sho 'r tŷ °long ............ I want the houseboat.
Notes... "eisiau" is often written in a variety of ways in colloquial Welsh.
tŷ = house
Llong = boat.
No doubt you are wondering why Mr. Long has SM'd his wished-for boat ... scholars have wrangled over this for far too long, no pun intended, but there are four main theories....
[a] He forgot that a house is masculine in Welsh ...easily done.
[b] He might have thought that the house was the subject of the sentence, when actually it's the object. An elementary error, but understandable considering all his pressing commitments.
[c] He thought "Shorty Llong" would look a bit odd and might give away his coded message about wanting a houseboat. Most people in his position tend to want a private jet or a mansion in LA .... not a bloody houseboat!
[d] We musn't forget all those strange and almost-forgotten mutation rules that might seem a bit odd nowadays ... for example, anything written during Pentecost was subject to a whole cavalcade of mutation rules including the P - H supernasal mutation and the notorious "all LL-s turn to L-s wherever or whatever they are" rule which might have come into play here. Mind you, it was in force on afternoons only, but you never know. There isn't room here to go into such subtleties as Reverse Morganisation and the "Cysgod Cysefin" which does exactly what it says it does.... but not on odd-dated Tuesdays.
It's amazing how often you can spot hidden Welsh messages in this way... I bet you're kicking yourself now that you didn't notice it. I'll be bringing you more of them from increasingly unexpected places. In the meantime , if you know anybody with an unwanted houseboat, maybe you could pass the news on to " Shorty."
But now ... tuneful tunes from your tried and trusted song supplier, me. I don't think that our friend Shorty has done any Welsh stuff, so I have chosen top synth-pop band Nid Madagascar with "Byr" .... strangely, it's nowhere near as long as most of their stuff.
