Here's a review of the book ....
‘Wales the land of song’ or so the saying goes. Now with publishers Lolfa’s latest book 100 o Ganeuon Pop (100 Pop Songs) we’ll all be singing.
100 of Wales’ most popular songs along with the melodies, words and guitar cords are included in this perfect gift for any budding musician.
With classic songs from composers such as Dafydd Iwan, Caryl Parry Jones and Geraint Jarman, songs like ‘Y Cwm’, ‘Môr o Gariad’, ’Seithennyn’ and many more are included.
Meinir Wyn Edwards from Lolfa was handed the task of choosing which 100 songs to include in the book, a task that took her on an interesting musical journey. “Choosing 100 pop songs for the book was difficult, not because there was a shortness of songs, quite the opposite, there were too many good ones. It was very important to get a wide cross-section of songs that appeal to all ages through a wide variety of styles. They are not all ‘pop’ songs, for example ‘Colli Iaith’ and ‘Cân y Siarc’ are quite folksy, and a couple of Jarman’s songs have a hint of reggae to them – so I hope there’s something here for everyone. I’m sure not every song will be to everyone’s taste, and I’m afraid it’s all my fault if your favourite song hasn’t been included,” said Meinir.
Classic songs included are the likes of ‘Yma o Hyd’, ‘Chwarae’n troi’n Chwerw’, ‘Lleucu Llwyd’, ‘Harbwr Diogel’; along with popular old songs which are still favourites today like ‘Cân Walter’, ‘Ysbryd y Nos’; and songs that will surely be popular for years to come like ‘Trôns dy dad’, ‘Tŷ ar y Mynydd’, ‘Seithennyn’ and ‘Lisa, Magic a Porva’.
Simple melodies and guitar chords accompany each song to make learning simpler. A perfect gift for someone who’s learning to play guitar, a busker or anyone who simply enjoys Welsh music and songs.
A big fan of music herself, working on this book gave Meinir a chance to combine work and pleasure. “Personally I’ve rediscovered some songs such as ‘Yma wyf inna i fod’ and I also had to include songs from my favourite band of all time, Maffia Mr Huws! I also have to admit that a few of my favourites have been included. ‘Mor Dawel’ by Caryl Parry Jones, is, in my opinion, one of the best songs ever written, in any language in the collection. She is one of my favourite composers and I’m so glad that she’s coming to sing at the book launch. The aim of the book is for the reader to have pleasure playing the guitar and singing the songs and I hope that I’ve achieved that,” she said.
Songs from popular bands Sibrydion and Big Leaves are included in the book; Meilyr Gwynedd has been a member of both bands and is happy that his songs appear in the book. “This book is a great idea. I remember how much I used similar books when I was young. We had a book at home of songs by Dewi Pws and we’d always learn a lot from them – it was much more interesting than books like ‘Tune of the Day’! Having a good book like this with such a variety of songs would have been great when I started playing the guitar. I’m very chuffed that a few of our songs have been included in the collection and maybe there’ll be young children growing up learning one or two of our songs and other popular Welsh songs written over the last few decades.”
BBC Radio Cymru presenter Richard Rees notes in his introduction to the book; “At last there is a record of some of the most well-known and popular Welsh rock and pop songs. This book is a godsend to any frustrated rock performer in our midst that’s struggling to guess what the correct chords are by listening to the radio or a CD! I’ve always said that songs are like a diary. When you hear the first line to a song it takes you back to an event, place or first love. This is a chance for you to lose yourself in that diary and enjoy the memories as they come flooding back with every song.”
So ... here's # 83 in the list, Vanta playing " Tri mis a diwrnod" after a spot of rapid-fire Welsh... they're feeling smug because Gwibdaith ar at #84 ! Ha! un mwy !
