"Damwain myn cebyst i " says somebody .... we won't go into "myn " for the minute, we'll have a bit of a laugh with "cebyst" ....
This lovely word isn't in any of my small dictionaries for a start, or anything like it. The only word starting with ceb- in Collins-Spurrell is cebystr ( -au) a halter.
So I turned to the big boys ... namely, Y Geiriadur Mawr ... this has cebystr and cebystru ... to halter. Hardly a word that an 12-year old is going to know. But I suppose that's what it's got to be ... which brings us to "myn" .Well, it's got 2 meanings ... its a noun meaning "kid" and, ah-ha, it can also mean "by" in oaths!! A special word only to be used "in oaths" !!!! Smashing. That's a first.
Now this passage hinges around a kid being possibly hit with a belt, and someone trying to say it was an accident while they were playing ... it seems to me then that they're trying to pass this off as someone wrapping the belt around their neck for a bit of a laugh and something going wrong. " An accident by haltering her"
Except that , if this was said in an "oathy" sort of way it should have at least an exclamation mark after it ... fair do's !
Oh well ... how interesting and exciting to sort these little things out live and in real-time like I've just done now. That's if I have sorted it out.
So ...
[a] which other Welsh prepositions are "used only in oaths" ?
[b] are there any English prepositions confined to "oathy" use?
[c] Latin ought to be a rich field for "oath only" prepositions.
[d] What, if anything, does Gareth King have to say about it?
OK readers ... time for music, music, music ... well, music anyway ... it's the trippy, lovely song "Pam V" from Outspaced by the Super Furry Animals ...
The first track is notable for containing a sweary sample and still being released as a single; BBC Radio's attempt at censoring the track resulted in the last minute or two of the song being almost one long silence. The last track, "Blerwytirhwng" (Welsh for "Where are You Between?") is also notable in that it contains a more than five-minute-long outro of looped sci-fi noises.
According to Gruff Rhys the band "had to painfully omit some songs to compile Out Spaced as an album in its own right".[4]
