So I tried to take a lateral approach ... what should it be called?
Well, literally, wing-wax,waxwing would de Aden gwyr ( aden = wing, fem, and cwyr = wax)
looks good! But looking it up in my Welsh dictionaries drew a blank.
So ... on another tack ..its scientific name is Bombycilla garrulus ... the "garrulus" part means talkative ..which they are. They do a constant thin rattling sound which is very distinctive and far-carrying but being old I can no longer hear them .Well, I didn't hear those ones in the photograph anyway. This is a pity because it's the best way of finding them. The French name "Jaseur" doesn't mean "jazzy" even though they are jazzy, it means talkative/chatty.
So ... what's Welsh for a "chattery bird ?" Aderyn = bird , masc for a start. But what about "chattery/talkative/garrullous" .. tafodrydd, siaradus = talkative
clebryn,clebren = chatterbox.
chatter = trydar,cogor,clebran,rhincian.
chat (verb) = sgwrsio, ymgomio, dadwrdd
chat (noun) = sgwrs, ymgom, sisial
noisy = swnllyd, trystiog
Quite a choice ! I like "Aderyn trystog" and "Aderyn clebranog" myself. But none of those possibilities and combinations came to anything dictionary-wise.
I comforted myself by remembering that it is the process that matters .. the hunt, the quest...
Then, dear reader, I thought about the net .. being old (see above) this doesn't usually occur to me for a while ... but anyway, I had a peek and found a huge list of Welsh bird names .. here's a little bit of it....
Aden gwyr Bombycilla garrulus ( that's the one ... good job I know those Latin names!)
Aderyn adein goch Turdus iliacus
Aderyn bronfraith Turdus philomelos
Aderyn corph Strix aluco
Aderyn cywarch Carduelis cannabina
Aderyn du Turdus merula
Aderyn du'r dwr Cinclus cinclus
Aderyn eira Plectrophenax nivalis
Aderyn y bwn Botaurus stellaris
Aderyn y to Passer domesticus
Aderyn y tô Passer domesticus
Aderyn-bwn America Botaurus lentiginosus
Aderyn-bwn lleiaf Ixobrychus minutus
Aderyn-drycin bach Puffinus assimilis
Aderyn-drycin Cory Calonectris diomedea
If you want a bit of fun, try working out what their English names might be from the Welsh name... some of them are fairly obvious..... you could think of it as another installment of my Cwis Mawr .... and it might bring back some of that school Latin that some of you might have liked.
So there. readers, we are. I'm rather chuffed that I got it right the first time with Aden gwyr, complete with SM ... but as I said, really, all the fun of it is in the search. Oh yes, I said it was "jazzy" ... let's get a close-up !
