The whole idea of these "drop-in" phrases is that you can "drop in" different words into a simple phrase or sentence to suit whatever you want to say. If you collect a whole bank of these up in your brain you can trot them out very quickly and people will think you are clever. Let's take an English example ... "I'm just off to the shops"... well, once you've learned the "I'm (just) off to" bit, you can slot anything in at the end... " I'm just off to the cowshed" , "I'm just off to the vicarage" or getting adventurous and missing out the "just" bit, you could have "I'm off to the pro-fracking demo" ... except they don't seem to exist. Then you could get even more daring with " I'm NOT off to the chip shop, I'm off to the circus."
Anyway, you can see the advantages of having a little store of these upstairs.
Suppose you were reading " Y Twits" and you came across this ...
"Dyma'r glud cryfaf yn y byd !"
Well, you might not need that particular sentence any time soon , but think of all the possibilities! ....
Dyma'r glud gwaethaf yn y byd ! ( not very adventurous really)
Dyma'r lygoden gryfaf yn y byd ! ( nor that)
Dyma'r foronen hiraf yn y byd ! ( that's more like it)
Dyma'r lle chwech aroglaf yn y byd ! ( ych !)
Dyna'r lle chwech aroglaf yn y byd ! ( subtle )
Dyma'r tebot drud yn y byd ! ( no need for the -af)
Dyma'r hogen fedrusaf yn Lerpwl ! ( why is she in Lerwpwl then?)
Dyma'r trwyngornfil gwrtais yn y sw. (trwyngornfil is a brilliant pull-apart)
Dyma'r agorwr tuniau pryderusaf yn y hollfyd. (pam?)
As you can see, it's hard to resist making these sillier and sillier ... but so what? What are here for but to enjoy ourselves? The key thing with these drop-in things is to collect some and practice using them by dropping in all sorts of words. What's not to like?
To add to the excitement, here's GZM's lovely " O Caroline"
O Caroline
Faint o llythrau
Sy'n cael i ysgrifennu am ti
Cos, nos ar ol nos
Fi'n treial rhoi papur i phen
Cos nos ar ol nos
Fi'n treial rhoi papur i phen
Rwy'n teimlo'n well
Ar ol darllen gyda dy llythrau erbyn cyffuriau
Cos nos ar ol nos
Rwy'n treial rhoi papur i phen
Cos nos ar ol nos
Fi'n treial rhoi papur i phen
We'll meet again don't know where
Don't know why...
Ond rwy'n gwybod bydd e
Ryw dydd heuliog, ryw dydd heuliog
Ryw dydd heuliog
This song is a translation of the Robert Wyatt song from his "Matching Mole" days ... you can just about make it out ..track 1 ...
