Well, I've got a sort of mini-corpus .... around a fingernail's worth. Here it is ...
[a] Sgwenna i ei rif ffôn o ar hwn, yli.
[b] Mae nhw wedi gwnïo dy fol di'n ei ôl yn daclus reit, yli.
At this point I thought it was a "tag" of some sort.... but ...
[c] Yli, mae'n nhw'n mynd â dy gorff di'n ôl i Dolddu rŵan.
[d] Yli'r cwdyn, dwi ddim wed gorffen efo chdi eto, cofia.
[e] Yli'r cwd.
[f] Ylwch . ( imperative !So, it's some sort of shrivelled-up verb ?) ( But which verb?)
So far, it's only cropped up at the start or finish of a sentence. And ?
Remember that " Rule of Welsh #116 ... On every page of a Welsh novel you will find one word that drives you round the twist" ?
Come on, you must remember that ..it was only a mere 18 posts go.
Anyway, "Yli" is yet another example of Rule 116. Grrrrrrr.
There must be somebody out there who knows what it means ... I have calculated that on this blog I have probably asked people to tell me things about 5377 times ...and nobody ever has. My theory is that 99% of people who look at this blog have stumbled upon it by mistake whilst trying to find out about One Direction or Chvrches or whatever. The other 1% are tempted into learning Welsh by the over-optimistic blog title. In fact, I think I'll call this post " Everything you ever wanted to know about One Direction and Chvrches" and see what happens. Hah! Wedi neud !
Well, to justify that rather mendacious spot of titling, I'll have a punt at saying that one Direction and Chvrches would never have happened if it hadn't have been for Y Diawled's song " Noson Y Blaidd." Wedi neud eto !!
I've been thinking about this Yli business.... surely it can't be a shrivelled-up version of gwylio .... to watch, beware, mind ??
gwylio ?
It would be like contracting look-out to "oko" or "concentrate" to "onc" or "preposterous" to "epo" . Surely not.
