... and they've made a word for you as an example ... "super". You can go one space in any direction, tracking from letter to letter.... you can't visit the same bit twice, you can't move more than one space at a time , you can only count words of 3 or more letters and you can't use proper names etc. So, with that grid up there, you can do rust, lust, yelp,ship... but not Leroy ( proper name, even though it means the king in French) nor rest ( too big a jump from e to s, nor spit for the same reason, nor pips because you've gone to the same square twice.
By the way, you can get a few Welsh words out of it ... tro, sut, pel, plu ,pur leap out , and if you count the k as a c, which it is, you can have cer, cern and clun too.
Boggle is also a competitive game ... you get 16 lettered dice plus a gridded box they all fit into plus a sort of egg-timer to give you a time limit and a scoring system which I don't bother with but here it is anyway ...
No of letters 3 or 4 5 6 7 8+
Points 1 2 3 5 11
But I'm not really bothered about all that ... I see it as a way to recognise words you know, and learn about words you don't know ... Welsh words that is.
Well, of course, there is no Welsh version... so naturally I've set about designing one. I got a set from a charity shop and worked out how the letters on the dice were arranged, with a view to doing the same sort of thing using Welsh letter frequencies. I've made successive versions ... mainly because the first attempts didn't work very well.... the placing of the letters is subtler than I thought at first.
Here's one of the more successful of my attempts .... how many Welsh words of 3 or more letters can you find ?
S Y O N
B F dd I
P A S dd
C N D L
I've used dinky dd's because using capitals made the grid go all out of synch.
So... still some work to do with the "Boggle Cymraeg" set I think ... so here's some music to soothe the troubled thingy .... Y Reu gan " Diweddglo" ... a bit reminiscent of early Simple Minds maybe ...
