Ond .... PAM ?
Well, when I was in Wales recently, I asked a few people.
Most of them hadn't a clue. Arwyddol !
So I found an expert... there's a dinky hidden car park in the middle of Llandudno and there's a big toilet block next to it with a bloke behind a grille who takes 10p off you (or something similar) .. I asked him. He should know.
His theory was that it used to cost 6d to go in.. 6d per pee if you see what I mean. That sound reasonable. And extortionate. [ d = old pence]
But .... later on I asked a woman who worked in a charity shop. I bought a book called Blodyn Tatws and she was very impressed that I knew what it meant. I took the opportunity to ask her about this delicate question ... her theory, told to her by her mum I think, was this ... poor families in Wales lived in 5-room houses, plus an outside toilet ... the 6th room... hence tŷ chwech .. I like it. It makes sense.
So there we are .... any other ideas out there ?
