So wouldn't it be brilliant if we could find a way into them ... a way to simplify them a bit.
Well, it's your Dydd Lwcus because there is light at the end of the tunnel ... both ends, generally.
Let's have a look at a few words shall we ..... maybe we can pull them apart and look at the bits! ( I realise I have somewhat given this idea away in the title)
Wygell → ovary ... we can pull this apart and get Wy ... egg.... and cell = cell (minus the c-g SM)
So wygell is a cell/chamber where the eggs are ... that's an ovary folks !!
After that astounding success, let's try some more ...
Unben → dictator ... well, un = one, pen = head ... and when you've got one person at the head of any organisation they can often become a dictator. so there.
Wythnos →Wyth + nos = eight nights ...a strange but plausible way of describing a week ... which is what it means.
Lledrithiol = Lled + rithiol Ok, so Lled = quite, rather, partly and rhithiol = appearance/form/shape .... so it's a partly-appearing .... and Lledrithiol = illusory which is sort of right.
Arbrawf ... that's ar = about ( with future intent), and prawf = proof .... so it's about-to-prove, and arbrawf actually means an experiment ... which does that sort of thing.
Llygadrythu ... it means "to stare" and you can probably spot straight away that the elements are llygad = eye and rhythu = to stare.... so it's eye-stare which is a sort of exaggerated stare I suppose... a sort of intensifier ?
As you can see, some of these can be a little on the vague side ... but some are pretty baffling .... as we will see ....
Clustfys means your little finger ... well, the finger bit is the -fys = -bys part, but then we have the Clust- part meaning ear .... ear-finger.... could it be that it means" the finger that fits in your ear" which is indeed the little finger ? I'd like to think so. On that basis then the word for thumb should be Cegfys !
Ithfaen = granite ... OK, you've got the -faen = -maen = stone bit .... but what about the ith-
... ? Well, making a guess, spotted = brith ... could this have once been brithfaen ? Hey .. I'll look it up in one my ancient Welsh dictionaries ( downstairs). ( I have, and it wasn't)
This ones a real corker .... dadansoddi ... eek ! It means " to analyse."
Soddi is the reasonably obvious bit ... soddi = to submerge ... which you sort of do when you analyse things ... the -dan- part should be -tan- which is "under" which is submerging again (!) which leaves the da- at the start .... good. So it might be a good-double-submerging !
But looking at it another way, dad- could be the prefix meaning re-, back-, un-, dis- ... next in line is the -an- bit which also carries the negative, "undoing" connotation ... so the whole thing means un-un-submerging. Crumbs!
At the very least, trying to unravel ( or un-un-unravel) words like these is interesting and educational ... which is good. Dadansoddi - ing rules OK.
Let's have another Yr Ods song .. it sort of picked itself .... as you will see ...
